This section is the place for studies and essays about a variety of topics from the field of cultural studies. “Laboratory” means that while nothing is here that is not finished at least to a certain degree, most of these pieces are still developing. The first essay in this section is about Karl May, a German novelist whose novels set in the American “wild” West and written around the turn of the past century still remain popular in Germany up to this day. The second essay is on how immensly sometimes a specific place, Paris in this case, can influence literature The two other essays are part of a larger project that is currently developing, a number of essays dealing with the relationship betwen music and language and with the question: “What is a song?” I put up two examples of how one could look at popular songs from this angle first; the next step will be to take some steps backwards and deal with questions like “What is a word or a sign?”, “Is music a language” and “Whose voice are we hearing when we hear a song?” |
In diesem Bereich gibt es verschiedene Studien und Essays aus dem Bereich Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft. “Laboratory” für Labor soll andeuten, daß, obwohl hier nichts ist, was nicht wenigstens bis zu einem gewissen Grad fertig ist, diese Studien und Essays sich immer noch weiter entwickeln. Der erste Essay ist eher traditionell literaturwissenschaftlich, eine Analyse eines Gedichts von John Keats; das zweite ist der Beginn einer längenrReihe von Essays über Musik, Sprache und Performance in der Populärmusik des 20.Jahrhunderts. Die Arbeiten über Van Morrison und Leonard Cohen sind Beispiele für einer praktische Analysen; die nächsten Folgen werden dann ein paar Schritte zurückgehen und sich Fragen widmen wie “Warum hat ein Wort Bedeutung?”, “Ist Musik eine Sprache?” und “Welche Stimme hören wir, wenn wir einen Song hören?” Viel Spaß! |
